Theatre Ontario today announced the winner of the 2003 Victor C. Polley Award for Arts Administrators—Erin O’Rourke.  The annual award recognizes the achievements of an arts manager who is in the early stages of their career.  The award was established in 1983 to honour the work of Victor C. Polley, the first General Manager of the Stratford Festival and Manager of the St. Lawrence Centre, Toronto.
(l to r): Nancy Coy (Managing Director, LKTYP),
Erin O'Rourke (recipient of Award),
Jane Gardner (Executive Director, Theatre Ontario)

“Erin has demonstrated a strong commitment to arts management and clearly understands and embraces the demands of the ‘calling,’” says Nancy Coy, Managing Director of Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People.  “Her long-term goal is to be an arts administrator or general manager.  The Victor C. Polley Award is a testament not only to Erin’s distinct skills and successes, but also to the benefit of mentorships and training.  Erin was able to work with us because of the George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation, which provides vital internships that act as a springboard for an emerging cultural worker’s career.”

Erin O’Rourke of Toronto started her professional arts administration career as an intern at The Grand Theatre (London).  She assisted the Development & Sponsorship department with the organization of the theatre’s special events, including The Grand Theatre Ball & Auction, and the 24 Hour Playwrighting Contest.  She is currently employed at Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People (formerly YPT) where she is the Administration Coordinator.  There she is responsible for coordinating all government operating grant applications, preparing artist contracts, updating the theatre’s Human Resource policies and procedures, and participating on the Joint Health & Safety, Education & Community Outreach, and Marketing Committees.  Before becoming LKTYP’s Administration Coordinator, Erin served as a Development Officer where she planned and executed the Family Gala, and created and implemented an individual giving campaign.  Erin is an active volunteer, working with the Market Lane Public School, Girl Guides of Canada, and the December 6 Fund of Toronto.  She has a graduate diploma in Arts Administration from Concordia University, and continues to expand her knowledge through professional development courses like Human Resources Management at Ryerson University.

Maggie Bassett Award Presented To James Alexander

Each year Theatre Ontario celebrates the achievements of Ontario-based theatre artists who have made a sustained and significant contribution to the development of theatre in the Province of Ontario.

The award will be presented to James (Jim) Alexander by Leonard McHardy, co-owner of TheatreBOOKS and Chair of the award selection team, at the opening ceremonies of the Theatre Ontario Festival, at Oshawa Little Theatre (Oshawa) on Wednesday May 14, 2003.

James (Jim) Alexander, the recipient of the 2003 Maggie Bassett Award, demonstrates deep commitment to community theatre. A charter member of the Belleville Theatre Guild (BTG), Jim Alexander has been involved with BTG each and every year, for fifty years as an award-winning director, lighting designer, set designer, actor, producer, workshop organizer and presenter, and teacher. He most recently chaired the Program Committee of the Guild, overseeing the selection of each season. "As Belleville Theatre Guild celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2002, it is fitting to honour Jim with the Maggie Bassett Award, in recognition of his dedication to our Guild, and to his sincere love of theatre," declares Jim Ross, Past President of the Belleville Theatre Guild.

Jim Alexander was instrumental in the creation of the Trenton Community Players almost fifty years ago. Trenton Community Players serves the community neighbouring Belleville to the west. Jim recently designed Talley’s Folly, which will be presented at the Theatre Ontario Festival on May 15, 2003.

Jim Alexander, the 2003 recipient of the stunning bronze statuette entitled "Courage," met the woman for whom the award is named. "Winning this award is all the more special because I met Maggie in the 1960s when she and I, along with Kay McKie, Richard Howard and Dusty Miller, also recipients of the Maggie Bassett Award, attended a weeklong directing workshop for community theatre artists. She was dynamic and talented, and inspiring," Jim enthused.

The Maggie Bassett Award is presented in tribute to the late Maggie Bassett who, as Theatre Ontario’s first employee, pioneered dynamic programs, including the Professional Theatre Training Program and Summer Courses that continue to benefit the entire province.

Writer Norm Foster Receives Special Achievement Award

Theatre Ontario and Playwrights Canada Press honoured writer Norm Foster with a special achievement award for “distinguished service to Ontario’s theatre community” during Theatre Ontario’s annual festival held in May.

“This special achievement award recognizes Norm Foster for the tremendous body of work he’s created, the enthusiasm with which our theatre audiences respond to his plays, and the impact he’s had on Canadian theatre in terms of being Canada’s most produced playwright,” said Jane Gardner, Executive Director of Theatre Ontario. “Foster has produced an astonishing number of successful plays. From coast to coast, his plays have brought enjoyment to directors, actors and audiences who have experienced his work.”

Norm Foster’s first play, Sinners, premiered in 1983 at Theatre New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick and since then he’s written over 30 plays. At the Gala Awards ceremony, Angela Rebeiro of Playwrights Canada Press read an excerpt from a new collection of Foster’s plays called Vintage Foster: Six Plays by Norm Foster.

Norm Foster was born in Newmarket and raised in Toronto. His 25 year career in radio has taken him from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg to Kingston and finally to Fredericton, New Brunswick. It was in Fredericton in 1980 that Foster was introduced to the world of theatre. “A friend of mine was going to audition for a community theatre production of Harvey and he asked me to go along,” said Foster. “I went, just for a lark, and I wound up getting the part of Elwood P. Dowd. The funny thing is, I had never even seen a play in my life before this.” Foster fell in love with the theatre right then and there, and two years later he penned his first professionally produced play, Sinners.  It was produced by Malcolm Black at Theatre New Brunswick, who would also direct Foster’s next play, the highly successful The Melville Boys. Foster calls The Melville Boys his signature play – the one that brought his name to the forefront of Canadian theatre and has been produced across Canada and  the United States, including a well-received run Off-Broadway.

Two new Norm Foster plays will premiere this summer: Storm Warning at Bluewater Summer Playhouse in Kincardine (July 17 to August 2); and The Love List at Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque (October 8 to November 1). Norm Foster and his wife Janet Monid will appear in his play, The Long Weekend at Port Stanley Festival Theatre (June 12-28). In Ontario, this summer you can see 5 of Foster’s other plays: The Foursome (at Georgian Festival Theatre in Meaford and at Nipissing Stage Company in North Bay); The Last Resort (at Red Barn Theatre in Jackson’s Point); My Darling Judith (at Theatre Collingwood); Sadie Flynn Comes To Big Oak and Self-Help (at Upper Canada Playhouse in Morrisburg). Announcing the Intern Directors for the
2004 Shaw Festival Directors' Project

Andrew Freund and Kelly Daniels have been chosen as the two Intern Directors for the 2004  season at the Shaw Festival.

Each year, the Academy of the Shaw Festival and Theatre Ontario invite emerging directors from across Canada to apply for this prestigious professional development opportunity.  The two successful candidates work with the Shaw Festival Company for a period of five to six months.  The interns work as assistant directors, assisting at least two different directors in two different Shaw theatre spaces.  They also have the opportunity to participate in classes, seminars, special events and workshops under the auspices of The Academy of the Shaw Festival.  Their work culminates on the Directors' Day, during which each of the selected directors present a one-act play (chosen from the mandate of the Shaw Festival) to an invited audience of producers and artistic directors.

The Directors' Project is a joint project of The Academy of the Shaw Festival and Theatre Ontario, and is generously sponsored by Sun Life Financial.

Mr. FREUND graduated from University of Calgary with two degrees - a BFA in Drama and a BA in English - and now makes Toronto his home.  His 10 years of professional experience in the theatre have included a broad base of experience behind the scenes, including stage management, technical areas, and design, always building towards a fuller understanding of the theatre in order to become a better director.  From 1997 to 2000, he apprenticed at the Stratford Festival both in lighting design (assisting Michael J. Whitfield and Louise Guinand] and as an assistant director [to Martha Henry and Robin Phillips).   His own directing credits include original new works, and contemporary plays as well as classics.  Earlier in 2003, he directed An Evening of One Act Plays which included Farewell to the Theatre by Shaw Festival favourite Harley Granville Barker.

Ms. DANIELS has been a Manitoba-based theatre artist for the last 13 years - directing, teaching, AND acting, mostly in Winnipeg and Calgary.  While a majority of her directing work has been with senior acting students and emerging professionals, she has also directed several successful independent projects and fringe shows.  She is proud to have assisted three top female directors on mainstage shows - Micheline Chevrier, Marti Maraden, and Jackie Maxwell.  Currently she is directorial assistant to Stephen Schipper at Manitoba Theatre Centre and will be directing an Edward Albee play there in January 2004.
